The poem that follows is perfect for this Valentine’s Day! (30 May 2014) To honor this day, which is important to a few of us, I will share one of my own poems, which comes from my poetry collection Words Fail: Confessions of an Incurable Romantic, and was inspired by my better half; it is called “Time Alters All Flesh”:
A day does not go by without my seeing
a part of myself
reflected in your countenance.
Time hammers at who you are
and who I am.
Like the blacksmith mixing
raw metals into alloy,
the heat of trials and passions
melt and mix us.
The sharp blows of life
shape and mold
who we are into what we become.
I become you–
you become me.
Two into one–
and from one,
many.
Come back Tuesday for another edition of the Poet’s Corner! Find this and my other poems here.
